About HPC Foods

Proudly serving Hawaii since 1946.

Four generations, 180+ employees, and one mission — delivering quality products while supporting Hawaii's local farmers and communities.

Laboratory History

HPC Foods Laboratory key milestones.

From a small in-house testing operation at HPC Foods, Ltd. to Hawaii’s first ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited food microbiology laboratory open to the public.

2013

HPC Foods Laboratory department was established. Introduced PCR-based molecular detection for pathogen testing in food products manufactured in-house at the Poi, Sprouts, and Produce Processing Center departments. This type of testing was also used to test the irrigation water products were grown in at the Sprouts department.

2019

Expanded the laboratory to include a dedicated PCR testing area, designed with clearly defined zones for pre-PCR, amplification, and post-PCR activities to minimize the risk of cross-contamination. This upgrade incorporated enhanced biosafety measures, including unidirectional workflow, specialized ventilation considerations, and strict contamination/decontamination control protocols.

2024

Introduced U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved, validated methods for the analysis of potable and wastewater, expanding the laboratory's capabilities to include comprehensive water testing.

2025

Became the first laboratory in Hawaii to offer accredited food, water and environmental sample testing services. Achieved ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation through the American National Standards Institute–American National Accreditation Board (ANAB), demonstrating technical competence, validated methods, and a strong commitment to internationally recognized quality standards.

2026

Expanded the scope of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation to include a few more validated testing methods for both food and environmental samples. This enhancement strengthened the laboratory's technical capabilities, allowing it to offer more comprehensive and reliable analytical services.

Quality & Accreditation

Hawaii’s first ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited food microbiology laboratory.

HPC Foods Laboratory holds ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation through the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) for the microbiological testing of food, water, and environmental samples — the strongest internationally recognised credential available for testing laboratories. Our scope was expanded again in 2026 to cover additional validated methods across food and environmental matrices.
